Mater Mothers' Hospitals
Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospitals are one of the premier maternity facilities in the southern hemisphere, providing care and support for women and their families in one collocated facility.
Since its beginnings almost 50 years ago, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals have been the birthplace for over 300 000 babies welcoming more than 9000 babies into the world each year. This makes Mater Mothers’ Hospitals Australia’s busiest maternity hospital and also one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere.
Through the NCCU, Mater provides specialised medical and nursing care to 2000 seriously ill or premature babies each year. The unit is one of the biggest neonatal critical care units in Australia with 79 cot spaces, providing 24 hour care for babies born as early as 24 weeks gestation, weighing as little as 400 grams.
Jonathon and Ethan’s story
Gold Coast mother of three, Leiza Mosley and her newborn twins Jonathon and Ethan know first-hand the specialist medical care provided at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals.
In her thirtieth week of pregnancy, Leiza’s waters broke in the middle of the night so she was rushed by ambulance to Brisbane where she then spent the next seven days in Mater Mothers’ Hospital prolonging the birth of her babies.
Born almost ten weeks early, the twins spent just over eight weeks in the NCCU with Ethan requiring several highly specialised surgeries for an upper bowel perforation and Jonathon requiring close monitoring after developing Supraventricular Tachycardia where his heart rate sky-rocketed to 280 beats per minute.
Side by side both babies fought for their lives and were finally discharged from hospital after 53 days.
How you can help
For Mater to continue to provide this high level of expertise for babies like Jonathon and Ethan, we need the support of the community. The House for Life project aims to raise much-needed funds through the auction of this stunning property. However, every little bit helps.
If you aren’t in the market for a house but would like to make a donation to help support some of Queensland’s smallest and sickest babies, you can donate to the Mater Foundation.
The Mater Foundation is the community support and fundraising arm of Mater Health Services and the Mater Medical Research Institute. Donations to the Mater Foundation help purchase life-saving medical equipment, improve patient care and ensure our world-renowned research team continues to find better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately cure life-threatening diseases.
